Misogynist, Racist Letter at USC Ignites Anger
Students at the University of Southern California have been grappling with a campus scandal ignited by a highly controversial, misogynistic email. The sexist treatise was apparently circulated within the USC Greek community before being leaked in early March to the feminist website Jezebel. In the email an anonymous male writer addresses his frat brothers in the Kappa Sigma fraternity. He encourages them to keep highly explicit records of their sex lives, which he will compile into a shared “gullet report”. He explains, “The gullet report will strengthen brotherhood and help pin-point soros-titiutes more inclined to put-out.” The letter writer goes on to urge men to label women as “targets”, and to use vulgar slang when referring women’s genitalia. His definition for a woman’s mouth is as follows: “Gullet: Usually refers to a target’s mouth and throat…My advice is to seek out this target early in the night.” He discourages condom use, and glorifies sex facilitated by alcohol abuse writing that a drunk woman is “a target that is very easy to take down.” He says there is a fine line between non-consensual sex and rape, and he rates potential female liaisons by their ethnicity and the appearance of their genitals. Since the email first went public it has been dismissed as satire by some. However, USC’s Inter-Fraternity Council, or IFC, released a statement condemning the content of the anonymous email, but claims the author is not a USC student and not affiliated with any of the fraternities on campus. In response, an anonymous source reported to Jezebel that the IFC, the Daily Trojan—USC’s student-run newspaper—and various school administrators have been trying to conceal the true origins of the email. The source claims that it had been circulating within the Greek community since this January, and that it had in fact been written by a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. USC has said that it will launch its own independent inquiry as soon as the Kappa Sigma national board concludes its investigation into the incident.
Uprising intern and USC senior Kristin Culbert filed this special report speaking with two other USC students.

There will be a USC walk out and open forum for student discussion about the questions raised by the fraternity email: Monday Arpil 4th on campus at 11am – 1pm, meeting at “Tommy Trojan”.
