The Forgotten Bomb
As Japan struggles to recover from the devastating earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear disaster, residents of the city of Hiroshima have a serious lesson to share: they know personally the disastrous legacy of nuclear technology, and nearly sixty six years after their city was decimated by a U.S. atomic bombs, Hiroshima residents are looking toward Fukushima with horror. An eighty two year old survivor of Hiroshima told the Sacramento Bee, “I feel like it was a third A-bomb attack that we Japanese made ourselves.” Even though worldwide there is majority opinion against nuclear weapons, there is relatively more support for nuclear power through the belief that it is a “clean” and “safe” source of energy. But there are strong links between nuclear power and nuclear weapons – in fact the raw material for both weapons and power are the same: enrichment processes of radio active material can be used either in reactors or war heads. While who can be trusted with nuclear weapons is often highly politicized, after Japan, one thing is clear: the world needs to seriously consider if nuclear power is worth the risk. A documentary examining nuclear weapons called The Forgotten Bomb, is just out on DVD, and it explores, among other things, the links between nuclear power and nuclear weapons.
