chris hedgesOn Sunday, following the news of the killing of Osama bin Laden by US Navy Seals, veteran journalist and author Chris Hedges spoke at a fundraiser for Truthdig where he is a columnist. Commenting on the news of bin Laden’s death he said, “The expansion of military occupation that took place throughout, in particular the Arab world, following 9/11 – this presence of American imperial bases, dotted, not just in Iraq and Afghanistan, but in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Doha – is one that has done more to engender hatred and acts of terror than anything ever orchestrated by Osama bin Laden.” Chris Hedges spent two decades as a foreign correspondent in the Middle East, Africa, and the Balkans. He was at the New York Times for 15 years and was part of the team of writers that won the Pulitzer prize in 2002 for that paper’s coverage of global terrorism. He has taught at Columbia University, New York University and Princeton University and is currently a Senior Fellow at the Nation Institute and a columnist for Truthdig.com. Chris Hedges’ acclaimed books include “War is a Force that Gives us Meaning,” “American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America,” “Empire of Illusion: The End of Literacy and the Triumph of Spectacle,” and “The Death of the Liberal Class. His latest book, just published by Truthdig, is called The World As it Is: Dispatches on the Myth of Human Progress.

Chris Hedges spoke last Friday at an event organized by KPFK and All Saints Church in Pasadena. He addressed a packed audience of people – we present excerpts of his talk.
