capitalPresident Obama, last Wednesday addressed a townhall meeting on the economy where he was asked by a pregnant woman who was just laid off, what he would do in her place. Karin Gallo, an employee of the federal government addressing President Obama at a townhall on the economy in Washington DC last Wednesday. The event aired on Thursday on CBS, which sponsored it. The President did not answer Gallo’s question point blank, and instead thanked Gallo for expressing the human costs of the economic recession. Despite some easing of unemployment rates seen last month, the economy continues to be in crisis mode for the vast majority of Americans, while the top fractions of the top 1 percent of earners wield disproportionate political power to keep things this way. A new book by journalist Sasha Lilley explores the current crisis of capitalism through a number of interviews with contemporary thinkers like David Harvey, Noam Chomsky, Tariq Ali, Dave McNally, and many others. In Capital and its Discontents, Lilley surveys neo-liberal capitalism, its contradictions, and alternatives to it.
