Youth and Gender Media Project

Jonathan SkurnikThe Youth and Gender Media Project explores through film, the stories of gender non-conforming children and their parents. Through two short films called “I’m Just Anneke,” and “The Family Journey,” Director and Editor Jonathan Skurnik sees his films as a tool to “educate and transform school communities across the United States.”

Uprising host Sonali Kolhatkar spoke with Jonathan Skurnik on June 7, 2011 about the project.

I was especially interested in your programming of the films now being produced to education parents to the subject of gender nonspecific children. This is a subject on which little has been written or discussed and which parents of these children sorely need.

Also,Sonnalie, I have been listening to KPFC ever since I moved up from San Diego county 3 years ago. I have a question for you personally and that is listening to your theme song at the end of your program, the woman is singing and repeats twice a line from the theme song and I have never been able to understand what she is singing. Please tell me the last line of the theme song which is repeated twice!

I love Sunali’s show. I listen to it every morning on my way to work and I pledge money when I can and what I can because I strongly support this program in particular, although KPFK has wonderful programs.

Re. Jonathan Kay’s interview, I was unable to hear the whole interview but he didn’t seem to address the psychology behind the generalizations made by conspiracists. The reason why. The media, in my opinion, is at the crux of this dilemma. The more the media lies to the public, the more conspiracies will flourish to try to make sense of a world that otherwise makes no sense. The prophecies that have recently surfaced translate to me as mass suicide (or the hope of) due to lack of hope on a once happy American society. Thank you.
