walkervilleThe state of Wisconsin came under an international spotlight earlier this year after union workers stood up to a draconian curtailment of their rights to organize. These days, the labor movement in that state has been out of the limelight but not out of steam. To protest Governor Scott Walker’s latest budget plan – which includes slashing hundreds of millions of dollars from education and Medicaid – activists have set-up a tent city outside the capitol building in Madison dubbed Walkerville. Hundreds are camped outside because the Governor has barred protestors from the capitol building. Writing for In These Times Mike Elk reported that 1,000 people marched on Monday to protest Walker’s fiscal agenda. Twenty five people, including two journalists, were cited by police or arrested. Andrew Sernatinger reports that over the rest of the week Firefighters, teachers, union members and others will hold themed actions in an effort to ramp up resistance to Walker’s agenda. Earlier this month, recall petitions for 6 Republican State Senators were approved. They will face a special election on July 12th.
