LA Skid Row Activist Faces Criminal Trial for Protesting; Advocates See Pattern of Retaliation

general dogonLos Angeles skid row activist and resident Steve “Dogon” Richardson is awaiting trial on charges stemming from an arrest at a protest one year ago. Last May, Richardson was one of about 300 housing advocates who packed a meeting of the LA City Council to push for rent freeze in the city. The freeze was not approved by the Council that night, causing the large group to begin a protest chant. LAPD officers were called in to disperse the crowd, and three participants, including Richardson, were arrested. Witnesses say the LAPD pushed, kicked, and hit Richardson before he was removed from the room. He was subsequently the only one of the group that was charged with a felony for resisting arrest. Later, the felony was downgraded to a misdemeanor. Richardson’s supporters, including those at the LA Community Action Network, say the case against Richardson is a veiled attempt at retaliation by the LAPD against one of skid row’s best known police watchdogs. He has been an out spoken critic of the LAPD and treatment of skid row residents.
