UK Telegraph: Hamid Karzai says he will not seek third term
Mr Karzai said he would abide by the constitution’s demand that he step down when his second five-year term concludes in 2014 – just as Nato hands over security responsibilities to the Afghan state.
He had begun the search for a successor, he added.
A statement from the presidential palace said he had announced his intentions to a gathering of MPs in response to “rumours”.
Opposition leaders have long accused Mr Karzai of a plot to either rewrite the constitution and secure his leadership, or hand over to a family member and turn the presidency into a dynasty.
