Gaddafi’s Regime on the Verge of Crumbling; Libyan Rebels Declare Victory
Libyan rebels marched into their capital Tripoli earlier today and arrested two sons of the long-time dictator Muammar Gaddafi, in a dramatic turn of events in the on-going battle for Libya. Control of Tripoli essentially means that the Gaddafi regime is near its end. Al Jazeera interviewed Mohammad Gaddafi, one of the arrested sons, just before he was captured. Colonel Gaddafi himself is reported to be missing, even as several factions loyal to him continued fighting in parts of the city and country. The Libyan rebel’s formal opposition body, the National Transitional Council, broadcast the following electronic message: “We congratulate the Libyan people for the fall of Muammar Gaddafi and call on the Libyan people to go into the street to protect the public property. Long Live Free Libya.” Thousands of Libyans are gathering in the central Green Square, where government officials often held forced pro-Gaddafi rallies. The mood is jubilant in the rebel stronghold of Benghazi, where opposition forces were based throughout most of the revolt. It remains to be seen what this means for the U.S. and NATO’s military intervention. President Obama in a statement last night said, “The future of Libya is now in the hands of the Libyan people.”
