Gaddafi is Reported Killed; What’s Next for Libyan Rebels?
Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi, who ruled his country with an iron fist for over forty years, has reportedly been killed by opposition forces earlier today. Gaddafi had faced a major popular uprising since this past February. Buoyed by the successful revolutions in Tunisia and Egypt, Libyan rebels organized themselves in the face of violent retaliation by Gaddafi’s forces, and were joined in March by US and NATO forces in what turned into an escalating international war. In August the Libyan opposition claimed to have gained control of Gaddafi’s traditional stronghold and the nation’s capital, Tripoli. This morning’s news was initially surrounded by some confusion, with reports of Gaddafi being captured, and other reports claiming he was killed. Both the New York Times and Reuters are now reporting the long-time dictator is dead as a result of clashes between opposition forces and his loyalists near Gaddafi’s home town of Sirte. Al Jazeera English has published a photo of what appears to be the bloodied face of the late Gaddafi on the front page of their website. Libyans are reportedly celebrating all over the country and in the diaspora.
