Special Report on Occupy LA’s Day of Action
Hundreds of activists took to the streets of downtown Los Angeles yesterday in the on-going movement for economic justice at a time of unparalleled income inequality. Members of Occupy Los Angeles joined forces with the Good Jobs LA coalition, in marching through LA’s financial district, culminating in a major street being blocked, and surrounding a Bank of America branch. More than 70 people were arrested in various instances through the course of the day. The events were partly organized in solidarity with Occupy Wall Street in New York, whose encampment in Zuccotti Park, renamed Liberty Square, was violently ousted on Tuesday in an early morning raid. LA’s Occupiers have begun a vigil and another occupation of the downtown Bank of America Plaza which apparently is managed by the same private company that owns Zuccotti Park – Brookfield Properties. Meanwhile on the Westwood campus of UCLA, student activists erected 25 tents for an Occupy UCLA action called Take Back UCLA. Campus officials are pushing to remove the tents.
Uprising’s Martina Steiner was at yesterday’s actions in Downtown LA and filed this special report.
Special thanks to Laura Mann.
