Friend of KPFK, Peter Bergman Dies at Age 72
Listen to this segment | entire program
Peter Bergman, a founding member of the Firesign Theater comedy troupe and host of Radio Free Oz here on KPFK in the late the late ’60s, passed away Friday March 9th, in Santa Monica, at the age of 72. A spokesperson said he died due to complications of leukemia.
The Firesign Theater albums gained a cult following for their satrical and absurd routines that skewered power figures and ridiculed the status quo. In 1972 a New York Times review described the Firesign Theater albums as works of, “intricate wordplay, stunning engineering and use of sound effects, breakneck pacing and, of course, a terribly complex story line.
Peter Bergman was a valued programmer and friend of KPFK and Pacifica Radio. He will be missed. We’ll go now to a clip of the Firesign Theater’s piece titled, “What is America made of?” from side B of their album, “How Can You Be In Two Places At Once, When You’re Not Anywhere At All”.
