A community town hall meeting was held on Saturday March 3rd in Los Angeles bringing hundreds of local activists and community members together to discuss what’s called the LAPD’s Special Order 11, and Special Order 1. These special orders authorize the police department to gather “street-level” intelligence on what is called “observed behavior,” and coordinate with Federal agencies like the Department of Homeland Security. Activists counter that they instead violate the public’s privacy and civil rights and encourages the practice of racial profiling.

Today we’ll spend the hour hearing the March 3rd Town hall meeting where a number of local area residents shared their stories of abuse from local law enforcement and the violations of their rights by local and federal government agencies.

The event was organized by groups including the Community Labor Strategy Center, Dream Team LA, IDEPSCA, LA CAN, Occupy the Hood, Youth Justice Coalition, National Lawyers Guild, La Chamba, ACLU and others. Hamid Khan, is a Soros Justice Fellow working on a campaign to end LAPD’s Special Order 11, and former Executive Director of the South Asian Network – he also occasionally sits in for me on Uprising. Hamid hosted the town hall meeting.
