Outrage Over Trayvon Martin Killing Spreads to LA
Controversy and outrage continue to surround the February 26th shooting death of Florida teen Trayvon Martin. Martin, 17, was shot in the chest by self-appointed neighborhood watchman 28 year old George Zimmerman, while walking through the Retreat at Twin Lakes gated community in Sanford, Florida. A nationwide uproar has ensued over allegations of police mishandling of evidence, causing the Sanford Chief of Police Bill Lee to “temporarily” step down last Thursday amidst a hail of criticism. Reverend Al Sharpton, who held a rally later that day, mocked his resignation and demanded the arrest of Zimmerman, who has remained free on grounds of self defense. Florida’s “Stand Your Ground Law” has come under intense scrutiny since the shooting for the wide latitude it gives citizens to use deadly force when a threat to life is perceived. On Friday President Obama, stated provocatively, “If I had a son, he’d look like Trayvon,” alluding to the case’s racial dimension. Thousands of people took part in the “Million Hoodie march” in New York City and the Bay Area on Wednesday, and over the weekend marches were held in a number of cities including Seattle, where 2000 marched yesterday to demand justice for slain teenager.
Here in Los Angeles on Sunday, despite low temperatures and pouring rain, dozens of people attended a rally calling for justice for Trayvon Martin. They marched from the corner of Exposition and Crenshaw Blvds to Leimert Park. Uprising Correspondent Kevin Walker was there and filed a special report.
