Evangeline: The Queen of Make-Believe
Emmy-award winning Chicano rock legends David Hidalgo and Louie Perez, better known as founders of the world-renowned East L.A.-born band Los Lobos, have coalesced their creative talents once again in the form of a new multimedia play: “Evangeline: the Queen of Make Believe.”
A dedicated daughter and talented go-go dancer, Evangeline is a young Chicana growing up in a dynamic East Los Angeles neighborhood during the 1960s. Living in her world of fantasy fueled by the sights and sounds of the West side sixties, Evangeline’s dreams clash with her family’s expectations after her father’s death.
The play is set within the context of the historic 1968 student walkouts, a series of protests that were aimed at abolishing discriminatory practices towards Chicanos in schools. Evangeline is co-written by Theresa Chavez, Rose Portillo, and Los Lobos song writer, Louie Perez. It features a number of Los Lobos classic songs and opens at the Bootleg Theater May 12 and runs through May 27.
On May 10, 2012, Uprising host Sonali Kolhatkar interviewed Theresa Chavez and Rose Portillo about Evangeline.
