The side of a road 75 miles outside of Texas, in Nuevo Leon, Mexico, marked the location of what’s being called the Mother’s Day Massacre, a bloody sight that could have doubled as a set to a horror movie. Forty-nine bodies were found mutilated, beheaded and dumped on the side of the road last Sunday. Mexican authorities attributed the act to drug cartel violence, serving as an ominous reminder to all that the drug war is still very much alive.

Studies in recent years have revealed that 95% of cocaine, 80% of methamphetamine, and a minimum of 40-50% of marijuana sold in the United States comes from Mexico. Increasingly, the demand for illegal drugs from the United States is blamed for problems on both sides of its southern border. California Senator Dianne Feinstein, chairman of Senate Caucus on International Narcotics Control, last month called on the US to curb drug demand, stating, “Latin American leaders are rightly outraged that their citizens continue to suffer because of America’s drug habits.”

At the forefront of a growing movement against the punitive war on drugs and its consequences is Dr. Gabor Mate. Dr. Mate, a physician and best selling author, has become a respected voice in the health and public spheres for his use of sound medical science to link trauma and stress to lifelong addiction. He promotes the idea of context as an important factor in observing the development of a whole person, arguing that societal dysfunctions cause stress in the lives of individuals, leading to the development of disease and addiction.

Dr. Gabor Mate has written four acclaimed books on addiction, ADHD, and the mind-body connection, including In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts. He ran a private practice for over 20 years, spent 7 years in the Palliative Care Unit at Vancouver Hospital and most recently worked at the Portland Hotel in Vancouver, Canada with patients suffering from mental illness, drug addiction and living with HIV. Dr. Mate’s medical expertise combined with a rare kindness, humor, and intellect have made his books bestsellers.
