Occupy This Album Provides a Soundtrack for a Movement
Thousands of activists in Chicago have been protesting the North Atlantic Treaty Organization or NATO Summit for over a week. Protests during the 2-day summit on Sunday and Monday were among the biggest Chicago has ever seen. Baton wielding police officers bloodied a number of protesters in a two hour standoff on Sunday. And activists are reporting that 60 people have been arrested, with about a dozen people being injured.
With the major protests in Chicago the Occupy Wall Street movement has proven it is gaining strength – and now it has a soundtrack. In a 4 CD set called Occupy this Album, more than 75 artists have compiled a collection of music influenced by the Occupy movement. Many of the musicians dropped by Zuccotti Park to perform for protesters during the peak of the New York tent city that kicked off the movement, including Tom Morello, David Crosby, and even film maker Michael Moore. Yes, Moore has a rendition of The Times They are A’ Changing on the 4 CD set. Occupy This Album features such heavy-weights as Jackson Browne, Debbie Harry, Patti Smith, Willie Nelson, Third Eye Blind, Yoko Ono, Immortal Technique, Joan Baez, Steve Earle, Ani DiFranco, Graham Nash, and Lester Chambers. But it also includes tracks from lesser known, independent artists Antiflag, Cosmonaut, and Matt Pless, a Baltimore-based artist who inspired the album. A hundred percent of the sales from the 4 CD album will benefit the Occupy movement through the newly created nonprofit organization Music for Occupy.
