For most Americans today the term “Black Power” is associated simply with black berets and raised fists. Forgotten is the wealth of music, poetry and art that the movement inspired. ‘Listen Whitey! The Sights and Sounds of Black Power 1965-1975,’ written by acclaimed music producer Pat Thomas, is a reintroduction to the musicians, cultural icons, and social leaders of an era of American history defined by cultural upheaval, free expression, and the fight for racial justice and equality.

The book draws upon a wide range of sources in its exploration of the rich recorded legacy left by the Black Power movement of the 60s and 70s. Included are the histories of the obscure Motown subsidiary record label, Black Forum, which for three years, released recordings of socially significant speeches and interviews, such as Martin Luther King Jr’s. “Why I Oppose the War in Vietnam,” the 1968 “Free Huey Rally,” and “Guess Who’s Coming Home,” a collection of interviews with black soldiers fighting in Vietnam. Thomas also delves into the Black Power Movement’s influence on the era’s popular music; highlighting the evolution of many black recording artists who departed from the mainstream to comment on issues of politics and identity, as well as the movement’s impact on musicians like Bob Dylan, who introduced the injustices perpetrated against black men to white audiences.

The 200 page hardcover, ‘Listen Whitey!’ is replete with full color reproductions of album covers and rare vinyls, and is accompanied by a 16 track CD featuring music and recordings from Stokely Carmichael, the Watts Prophets, Bob Dylan, John Lennon, Amiri Baraka, Gil Scott Heron, and others.
