Chicago Tribune: Republicans block U.N. treaty to protect people with disabilities
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Republican lawmakers on Tuesday blocked a treaty to protect people with disabilities from discrimination despite a passionate plea from former Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole, who was severely wounded in World War Two.
The Senate voted 61-38 to pass the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, falling short of the 66 votes needed to ratify the treaty.

Salon: Wal-Mart wouldn’t pay for Bangladeshi factory safety improvements
At a meeting in April 2011, more than a dozen retailers including Wal-Mart, Gap, Target and JC Penney met in Dhaka to discuss safety at their supplier Bangladeshi garment factories. Bloomberg News revealed minutes from this meeting Wednesday, which show that Wal-Mart nixed a plan that would require retailers to pay their suppliers enough to cover safety improvements.
Last month, a fire in a factory used by Wal-Mart killed 112 workers. There were no fire exits. …

Lost Angels: Skid Row is My Home
A new documentary by Thomas Napper called Lost Angels shines a light on the people who inhabit LA’s Skid Row. Napper was the second unit director on the set of the acclaimed Jamie Foxx, Robert Downey Jr film, The Soloist, which was based on LA Times writer Steve Lopez’s book about a Julliard trained homeless man named Nathaniel Ayers. ‘Lost Angels: Skid Row is My Home,’ Brings to Life Stories of LA’s Homeless
