South Africans have been on edge for weeks now, watching with bated breath as their nation’s most important and revered political leader remains in critical condition. At age 94, Nelson Mandela is battling a lung infection. Despite rumors of his death, and a legal feud among relatives over Mandela family graves, Madiba, as he is affectionately called, has prompted a wave of national and international dialogue over his legacy, and South Africa’s recent history of apartheid.

GUEST: Douglas Foster is author of After Mandela: The Struggle for Freedom in Post-Apartheid South Africa. He is also an associate professor at Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, and the former editor of Mother Jones Magazine.
