City activities like farmers markets and “art-walks” are a mainstay of most Southern California municipalities, encouraging the mental and physical health and well-being of its residents.

The Westmont neighborhood of South Los Angeles, will finally enjoy it’s first ever Annual Art Walk this Saturday.

Organized by Community Coalition, the Art Walk will feature artists and vendors, and an art competition on the topic of “citizenship.”

Community Coalition has also helped recently to start a farmers market every Friday in South LA that offers local residents fresh, locally grown, organic produce.

On July 25, 2013, Uprising host Sonali Kolhatkar interviewed Alberto Retana, Executive Vice President of Community Coalition about South LA’s Art Walk and Farmer’s Markets.

DETAILS OF WESTMONT ARTWALK:

WHEN: July 27, 2013, 1:00PM – 5:00PM
WHERE: 108th St. and S. Denker Ave. (next to Washington Prep High School)
WHO: 500 community residents, Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas (invited)
WHAT: The Art Walk will bring together local artists, musicians, vendors, and community resources. There will be over 50 booths with artists displaying and selling everything from fine art — painting and sculpture — to jewelry, clothing, and urban art forms like graffiti murals and tattoo art!
