Uprising’s Friday guest expert Rose Aguilar, op-ed writer for Al Jazeera English and host of Your Call on KALW in San Francisco, analyzes today’s news headlines:

CIA operatives who were involved in the Bush-Administration’s secret extraordinary renditions program were scapegoated to take the blame, says a former agent turned whistleblower. In a series of interviews with McClatchy newspapers, former CIA Agent Sabrina Desousa blamed high level officials like Condoleezza Rice and George Tenet, as well as President Bush himself – all of whom signed off on the controversial practice of secretly transferring terrorism suspects to countries known for torture practices but will likely never face consequences.

And, in the latest on the California prisoner hunger strike where 600 prisoners remain hungry, an inmate in solitary confinement who was on strike is reported to have died at Corcoran State prison. His death is being investigated as a suicide. Meanwhile the LA Times just published a report on the leader of the strike, claiming that he is a member of the Aryan Brotherhood and quoting an LA County Jail official who says the strike leaders are out for power not rights.

Pope Francis is in the news for making controversial comments on social issues – on the one hand he has offered a fig leaf to gay priests saying he would not “pass judgment” on them. But on the other hand, he has made it very clear he does not approve of ordaining women as priests.
