Uprising’s Monday guest expert Rose Aguilar, op-ed writer for Al Jazeera English and host of Your Call on KALW in San Francisco, analyzes today’s news headlines:

More than a dozen and a half US embassies worldwide remain closed as a government issued terror alert remains in place. The US State Department issued the warnings apparently based on the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, and several recent prison breaks in Pakistan and Afghanistan. It also cited an intercepted message from Al Qaeda operatives. Some say the timing of these embassy closures in the Middle East and North Africa is a little convenient as it has enabled defenders of the National Security Agency to justify the widespread spying program that has been under serious public and congressional scrutiny in recent weeks.

If the NSA spying story isn’t enough to make Americans nervous about being watched, Reuters just reported this morning that Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) is also engaged in intercepting communications and gathering intelligence on Americans in order to launch criminal investigations. The intelligence gathering is done as part of the DEA’s Special Operations Division, which partners with the FBI, CIA, NSA, IRS, and Department of Homeland Security.

And finally in California news, Governor Jerry Brown stepped in last night into a labor dispute between the Bay Area Rapid Transit or BART system, to stave off a strike by workers. There is now a week-long delay to any potential strike as an investigation into the dispute is launched. If the strike were to happen it would be the second time this summer.
