Tens of thousands of Tunisians are demanding the resignation of their government, two and a half years after sparking the first revolution of the Arab Spring. Protesters have been gathering in the Tunisian capital of Tunis, angry over assassinations of several secular opposition leaders. The crisis has resulted in the suspension of a constitutional assembly that was just weeks from finalizing a draft constitution.
President Obama has canceled a meeting with Russian president Vladimir Putin set to happen next month in Moscow, apparently over the US’s disapproval of Edward Snowden being granted asylum. The White House, in addition to Snowden, also cited as reasons for the cancellation, a “lack of progress on issues such as missile defense and arms control, trade and commercial relations, global security issues, and human rights and civil society.”
The US Justice Department and the Securities and Exchange Commission have both filed lawsuits against Bank of America over the sale of hundreds of millions of dollars worth of mortgage backed securities. This is just the latest lawsuit to hit the bank which has already paid out billions of dollars to settle lawsuits since the financial crash.
An update on the sentencing hearing of Army Private Bradley Manning – there’s a bit of good news for Manning and his supporters – the military judge overseeing the case agreed yesterday to merge some of his convictions resulting in a possible maximum sentence of 90 years instead of 136 years. The Defense’s main task in this phase of the trial is to chip away as many years off the final sentence as possible.
