Eric Holder wants to reduce mandatory minimum drug sentencing in a major federal policy shift. The US Attorney General will make the announcement today that the federal government will no longer seek minimum sentences for many non-violent drug offenders – the move is aimed at easing prison overcrowding. According to the LA Times, “Under the new policy, prosecutors would send fewer drug offenders to federal prison for long terms and send more of them to drug treatment and community service.”

A federal judge has ruled that New York’s controversial “Stop and Frisk” policies are unconstitutional in a major victory for civil rights activists. The US District Court judge has appointed an external monitor to oversee the New York Police Department, claiming that it routinely violates people’s Fourth Amendment rights. The program, which has been credited by Mayor Bloomberg for greatly reducing crime in the city, has targeted hundreds of thousands of people each year – more than 90% of them are African American or Latino.

Two major sit-ins in Cairo by supporters of ousted President Mohammad Morsi are digging their heels in, as the Egyptian army prepares to break them up by force. More than 250 people have been killed in the past few weeks and protesters have prepared themselves for a crackdown as early as this morning, with gas masks and gloves, and have built trenches out of wood and concrete.
