North Carolina’s governor signs a sweeping new bill into law, rolling back gains made on voting rights. Within weeks of the Supreme Court decision to gut a major portion of the Voting Rights Act, states like North Carolina decided to restrict voting access. But within hours, a number of civil rights groups filed a lawsuit against the state.
One member of government strongly speaking out against the attacks on the Voting Rights Act is former Secretary of State and former First Lady, Hillary Clinton, who in a series of very presidential speeches, has strongly criticized the Supreme Court’s ruling. The LA Times this morning is calling it “her long, slow flirtation with the 2016 presidential campaign.”
After threats of peace talks breaking down between Israeli and Palestinian leaders, it is being reported today that Israel has moved a number of Palestinian political prisoners into an Israeli central jail. The release of prisoners was a pre-condition for Palestinians to start the talks. It is not clear if the prisoners will actually be released now or later. Meanwhile, Israel approved 1,200 new illegal settlements, in a move labeled by US Secretary of State John Kerry, as “to some degree expected.” Kerry urged Palestinians to overlook the settlements and allow talks to continue.
