Creating Freedom: The Lottery of Birth
The class, race, gender, and nationality we are born into shapes us in ways that are difficult to fathom and give lie to the American Dream, that everyone can make it if they try hard enough.
Yet, our education and employment can either encourage critical thinking and creative solutions, or turn us into obedient serfs that support the status quo.
Exploring these themes is a new documentary by film makers Raoul Martinez and Joshua van Praag called The Lottery of Birth. It’s the first film in a trilogy called Creating Freedom produced by the online ManguTV.
The Lottery of Birth dissects the intricacies of power, apathy and freedom and attempts to uncover what constructs our identities and informs how we interact with the world.
The film features a stellar cast of thinkers and activists such as the late Howard Zinn – in fact the film is dedicated to Zinn. Also featured Vandana Shiva, Stephen Pinker, George Monbiot, Michael Albert, and Bill Fletcher.
With almost no commercial advertising, The Lottery of Birth has become an online sleeper hit, reaching #3 on the iTunes documentary section.
