Indigenous Taiwanese Children Preserve Their Culture Through Music
Children aged 8 through 15 from an Indigenous Tribe in Taiwan are coming to Los Angeles this week to perform ancient ballads alongside multiple Grammy winning musician and composer Daniel Ho. The Taiwu Children’s Ancient Ballads Troupe will showcase a number of songs that are part of an oral tradition that would have been lost were it not for the perseverance of a humble teacher who helped the children learn their ancestral music. Like indigenous groups in most developed nations, Taiwan’s tribes have suffered from poverty and the steady loss of their culture. But now, with the help of the independent label, Wind Music, and Daniel Ho, children of the Taiwu tribe are reclaiming a rich heritage and showcasing their tradition all over the world and here in Southern California.
GUESTS: Daniel Ho, composer, performer, music engineer and producer, who has won 6 consecutive Grammy awards, and has collaborated with the Taiwu Children’s Ancient Ballads Troupe on an album called To and From the Heart, and on their current music tour, and Patricia Greene, the Operational Manager of the US Division of Wind Music
The Taiwu Children’s Ancient Ballads Troupe will perform with Daniel Ho a concert in Aratani/Japan America Theater at 8:00 p.m. on August 29 and two FREE educational showcases at Bowers Museum (at 11:00 a.m. on August 27) and at Pacific Asia Museum (at 3:00 p.m. on August 28).
