Fast Food Workers Launch One-Day Strike in 60 Cities Including Los Angeles
Fast food workers in at least 60 cities including Los Angeles are rallying for higher wages today with a one-day walkout and strike. Workers in other retail chains like Macy’s and Sears have joined today’s one-day strike in solidarity with fast food workers.
Building on the momentum of earlier one-day rolling strikes in Eastern cities like New York and Detroit, today’s strike continues the push to raise wages to $15 an hour.
The vast majority of fast food workers occupy positions that pay minimum wage or just slightly higher – around $7-8 an hour.
Workers are pointing to their inability to live off what McDonald’s, Wendy’s, and other major corporate chains pay them. Most workers rely on food stamps and other government benefits even if they are working full time.
Managerial positions which pay higher are only a tiny percentage of all jobs in the industry. McDonald’s Corporation reported profits of $5.47 billion in 2012.
The effort has been supported by SEIU and other organizations and unions.
