Muslims Performers Use Comedy to Combat Islamophobia
Rightwing talk show hosts are up in arms over a planned march today in Washington DC organized by the American Muslim Public Affairs Committee (AMPAC) to draw attention to post-9-11 Islamophobia. The march, which was originally entitled Million Muslim March, was renamed to Million American March Against Fear. Apparently conservatives upset about the march being held on the anniversary of 9-11, have planned a counter-motorcycle-protest.
Now, a new documentary attempts to take on the industry of Islamophobia in the US. It’s called simply, The Muslims are Coming. Co-Directed by two Muslim comedians, Dean Obeidallah and Negin Farsad, The Muslims Are Coming chronicles a daring national comedy tour in an attempt to quell American Islamophobia.
That’s a clip from The Muslims are Coming. The film opens this Friday at the Downtown Independent Cinema for a week-long run, after which it will be available on iTunes, Amazon, and cable-on-demand.
GUESTS: Dean Obeidallah is an award-winning comedian who appeared on numerous television news shows, and writes regularly for CNN.com and the Huffington Post. Negin Farsad is an acclaimed Iranian American comedian and actress, who has also won many awards and accolades. Obeidallah and Farsad are also co-director of The Muslims Are Coming.
