Daily News Flash with Rose Aguilar on UN Syria Report, Larry Summers, And NC Police Murder of Black Man
Uprising’s guest expert Rose Aguilar, op-ed writer for Al Jazeera English and host of Your Call on KALW in San Francisco, analyzes today’s news headlines:
The UN has concluded sarin gas was used in the deadly chemical attack of August 21st in Damascus, Syria. A United Nations panel of investigators has announced this morning that they have compelling evidence that surface-to-surface rockets deployed with the nerve gas, sarin, were used on a mass scale in the Ghouta area of Damascus. The panel has not concluded who deployed the missiles. The attack was used by the US as justification for threatening a military strike on Syria, and has led to the Syrian government agreeing to international oversight of its chemical stockpile. Meanwhile, a UN war crimes panel is investigating over a dozen instances of possible chemical weapons deployments. Click here for a Huffington Post article about the story.
President Obama’s controversial choice for Head of the Federal Reserve, Larry Summers, withdrew his name from the running last night. He would have been nominated to replace Ben Bernanke. Summers was criticized, among other things, for being one of the strongest defenders of economic deregulation and the derivatives markets. The Obama administration will be releasing a progress report this morning on its accomplishments for economic reform. Click here for a Guardian report about the story.
And finally, in yet another instance of fatal racial profiling at the hands of police, an African American man in North Carolina was shot dead by law enforcement. The man, 24 year old Jonathan Farrell, had just survived a car crash and was attempting to get help from nearby residents and police. Police shot and tasered him before attempting to question him. At least one officer has been arrested and charged while two others are on administrative leave. An attorney representing Farrell’s family said, “If Mr. Farrell was not black or brown, wouldn’t they have asked him a few questions before showering him with bullets?” Click here for an RT report about the story.
Meanwhile, there is breaking news this morning that there has been a fatal shooting at a Navy yard in Washington DC. The Washington Post is reporting that 4 people have been killed and 8 wounded. AP is reporting that “the shooter is “contained” but not yet in custody.”
And finally, in a follow up to our coverage of California immigration bills on Friday, the bill authorizing Drivers Licenses for undocumented immigrants which was initially pulled, was in fact voted on, and passed both state houses with overwhelming support Governor Jerry Brown announced on Friday that he would sign the bill into law.
