Daily News Flash with Rahul Mahajan on London Protests, Regulating Debt Collectors, and Washington’s Failed GMO Labeling Measure

Uprising’s guest expert Rahul Mahajan, sociologist and news analyst and author of Full Spectrum Dominance: US Power in Iraq and Beyond, analyzes today’s news headlines:

Hundreds of masked protesters clashed with police last night in London to protest austerity measures. Demonstrators wearing masks, popularized by the film V for Vendetta, gathered outside Buckingham Palace and in Parliament Square. Nearly a dozen people were arrested and some property damage occurred including a fire near Victoria Memorial. Some protestors threw fireworks toward the royal palace. Actor and activist Russell Brand was among those present. The protesters responded to a call for an “Anonymous Million Mask March,” and similar marches were held as far away as Japan, New Zealand, and Australia. The government consumer agency much maligned by the Republican right, is looking to regulate debt collection companies. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, headed by Richard Cordray, says it has received thousands of complaints from Americans against an industry notorious for using harassment and other questionable tactics to recover debts. Cordray told reporters, “Consumers deserve to be treated with dignity and respect, and businesses should be able to operate fairly and reasonably to collect the debts they are legitimately owed.” Click here for a Washington Post article about the story.

Elections and ballot initiatives were held in several cities and states yesterday around the country but perhaps none was as significant as the failure of a GMO labeling initiative in Washington State. In a playbook eerily reminiscent of what California voters were subject to a year ago, food and agricultural giants like Monsanto poured millions of dollars to defeat Initiative 522 in Washington yesterday. The measure lost 54.8% to 45.2% and the No on 522 broke all the state’s campaign spending records. Click here for a USA Today article about the story.

Another solution is to freeze interest rate charges, penalties and fees after an alleged credit card or student loan default has occurred, also known as Debt Neutrality.

If you agree with this idea please sign the Debt Neutrality Petition. Just click on the name link above and check it out.

Even a Debt Collector has signed the petition.

Hello! I just wanted to ask in case you ever have any issues with hackers? My last weblog (wordpress) was hacked and I ended up losing several months of hard work due to no backup. Do you have any solutions to protect against hackers?

Thanks for domkisleyt sharing your ideas right here. The other element is that whenever a problem develops with a computer motherboard, persons should not go ahead and take risk with repairing this themselves because if it is not done right it can lead to irreparable damage to an entire laptop. It is almost always safe to approach your dealer of any laptop for your repair of motherboard. They’ve technicians who have an experience in dealing with notebook motherboard complications and can carry out the right analysis and conduct repairs.
