A powerful new play which is traveling the country on a six city tour is arriving in Los Angeles this weekend. Placas: The Most Dangerous Tattoo written by Paul S. Flores, stars Ric Salinas, one of the founding members of the critically acclaimed performance group Culture Clash.

Using the placas or tattoo as a metaphor, the play centers around Fausto, an immigrant from El Salvador who is creating a new life for himself after having spent 9 years in prison. As part of his parole he is required to remove the tattoos which once defined himself as a gang member.

Set in the barrios of San Francisco, Fausto struggles to reconnect with his family and deal with the scars left from the decades long civil war in El Salvador which led to his family’s migration to the US.

Ric Salinas’ character is loosely based on the real life Alex Sanchez who founded Homies Unidos a group which has worked to prevent gang violence and promote peace. Sanchez is an ex-gang member who was brought up on false charges back in 2009 but had his indictment dismissed by the US Attorney’s Office in 2012.

Placas: The Most Dangerous Tattoo is playing at the Los Angeles Theater Center through April 6th.
