Climate Roundup: Australian PM’s Destructive Policies, US Southwest Adaptation, Heartland Institute’s Denialism, Divestment’s Latest, and Showtime Series
Each week Uprising will analyze the most pressing climate change stories of the past week with our guest Kelly Mitchell, Coal Campaigner for Greenpeace.
From Global Post: An ‘environmental train wreck.’ That’s what leading environmental scientists say that Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott has engineered, in less than one year in office. They say the changes he’s implementing could result in irreversible damage to some of the world’s most fragile ecosystems.”
From Associated Press: “As temperatures climb across the Southwest, researchers have found some species will win, but others stand to lose — and lose big…The jay stands to lose nearly one-third of its breeding range, while other birds could lose as much as 80 percent by the end of the century. On the other hand, the tortoise is the only reptile studied that isn’t projected to see a decrease in suitable habitat.”
From the Guardian: “For those concerned about climate change, the ultra-conservative Heartland Institute offers up a calming solution: try thinking of yourself as a pea, instead of a human. Peas in a lab sprouted faster with extreme concentrations of carbon dioxide, the greenhouse gas mainly responsible for climate change than under normal growing conditions, Heartland said.”
From Think Progress: “After mounting pressure from both students and the public, Harvard on Monday announced that it will heed calls to take climate change more seriously. In a release on its website, Harvard President Drew Faust said the prestigious Ivy League school would become the first American university to pledge, via a United Nations-backed program, to make more environmentally responsible and sustainable investments. The program, called the Principles for Responsible Investment, will guide the investment decisions of those who control Harvard’s $33 billion endowment.”
From Reuters: “As temperatures continue to rise and habitats come under threat, a group of Hollywood heavyweights is seeking to bring the spotlight back on climate change with a new documentary. ‘Years of Living Dangerously,’ a nine-part documentary beginning Sunday on CBS Corp’s premium cable network Showtime, chronicles the human impact on the global climate and the consequences for humans of climate change.”
