Activists Speak Out on Israel’s Operation Protective Edge
Nearly 80 Palestinians have been declared killed as a result of Israel’s Operation Protective Edge launched earlier this week. Among the dead were 8 members of a single family, five of whom were children. Israel’s Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon said on his Twitter feed, “We have long days of fighting ahead of us.” Israel has struck more than 750 targets in the besieged territory of Gaza that many call “the world’s largest open-air prison.”
Israel says it is merely responding to a round of rocket attacks originating from Hamas militants, which have killed or injured no one. One Gazan told Reuters, “The Jews say they are fighting Hamas and fighting gunmen while all the bodies we have seen on television are those of women and children.”
There have been many protests in cities around the US this week, decrying the Israeli operation. At the Israeli Consulate in Los Angeles, about 400 people gathered to speak out for Palestinian rights. On the other side of the street a few dozens pro-Israeli activists spoke.
Uprising special correspondent Arielle Zionts was at the scene and captured some of the voices present, both from the pro-Israel and from the pro-Palestinian side.
