Israel refuses to relent, bombing a crowded shopping center in Gaza killing 17 Palestinians and injuring hundreds. The attack on the market came just hours after a UN school that was providing shelter to Palestinians was also hit killing 15 people and injuring 100 mostly women and children. The head of the UN Agency for Palestinian refugees denounced the night-time attack, saying “Children killed in their sleep; this is an affront to all of us, a source of universal shame. Today the world stands disgraced.” In fact UN officials, who say they have lost 5 staff members in the attack, say 6 of their schools have been hit by Israel. A UN spokesperson broke down in uncontrollable sobs on camera after saying, “The rights of Palestinians, even their children are wholesale denied, and it’s appalling.” Meanwhile Bolivia’s President Evo Morales has declared Israel a “terrorist state” and revoked his country’s visa-free travel rules for Israelis. Even the Obama Administration, albeit with careful wording, seemed to condemn Israel’s belligerence. The President of Sierra Leone has declared a public health emergency over an outbreak of Ebola that has killed more than 600 people in his country, and Liberia and Guinea combined. The western African states are hoping to agree on a plan to combat a disease that has reached epidemic proportions. President Ernest Bai Koroma even canceled a trip to the US to deal with the growing problem. In recent days two leading physicians, Sheik Umar Khan, Sierra Leone’s top doctor, and Patrick Sawyer, an American Liberian doctor based in Minnesota, both died from the disease after treating Ebola patients. In the US, the Wisconsin Supreme Court – in two separate rulings – handed victories to Republicans. One ruling upheld the controversial anti-collective bargaining law that sparked a major uprising against Gov. Scott Walker. The other ruling upheld a law requiring voters to show IDs at the polls.
