Republicans have once more shot down the Paycheck Fairness Act, a bill that aims to reduce the wage gap between men and women. Currently American women make on average 77% of what men make – a statistic that has remained unchanged for about ten years. The Paycheck Fairness Act, would have, among other things, struck down secrecy policies that prevent women from discussing salaries to determine if they are being paid less. Workplaces that have less secrecy have proven to reduce the gender wage gap, as have unionized workplaces. Republicans – who say they are in favor of equalizing pay – refute the numbers, and claim there are enough protections in place. Click here for a Think Progress report on the story.

Yet another black man has been killed by police – this time in Saratoga Springs, Utah. Police claim that the 22-year Darrien Hunt brandished a sword at them when officers first shot him. An attorney for Hunt’s family says an autopsy shows he was shot in the back six times while running away. The family is aghast that the two police officers involved in the shooting had not even been questioned. The officers remain unnamed and are currently on paid administrative leave. Hunt’s mother told the press, “They killed my son because he’s black. No white boy with a little sword would they shoot while he’s running away.” Click here for a Guardian newspaper article about the story.

In international news, a group of Israeli soldiers who have refused to participate in actions that target Palestinians, have been deemed “criminal” by political leaders. The soldiers, referred to as “refuseniks,” signed a letter stating, “we refuse to take part in actions against Palestinians and refuse to continue serving as tools in deepening the military control over the occupied territories.” Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon responded saying, “Their refusal is politically, not morally, motivated … those who signed this will be treated as criminals.” Click here for an Al Jazeera America article about the story.
