People’s Climate March Flush With Funds, Short on Militancy
Activists from around the country and the world are flying to New York this weekend to march in what could be the largest gathering over the issue of climate change in history. Up to a hundred thousand people are expected to turn out on the streets of New York two days ahead of a UN meeting on climate that will lay the groundwork for a later meeting in Paris.
Students, immigrant rights activists, environmentalists, labor organizers, and clergy are among those who have signed on for the so-called “People’s Climate March.”
There are massive floats being constructed, banners being painted, and march routes being planned. More than a thousand organizations have been participating, many with differing agendas but with the common goal of sending a message to world leaders that the public demands a change to our fossil-fuel based economy.
The march comes in the wake of yet more studies underscoring the urgency of action on climate change. This August was the warmest since temperatures started being recorded in 1881, according to NASA.
Journalist Arun Gupta takes a critical look however, writing in Counterpunch, “there is no unity other than money…There is no sense of history,” adding, “I can smell a P.R. and marketing campaign a mile away.”
