Uprising’s guest expert Rahul Mahajan, a news analyst and sociologist and author of Full Spectrum Dominance: US Power in Iraq and beyond, analyzes today’s news headlines:

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has released its final draft report which will provide the basis for climate talks next year in Paris. The UN body released its report yesterday. It is a culmination of a number of reports over the past year and addresses the science and impacts of climate change as well as solutions to the growing crisis. A Sierra Club spokesperson summarized it saying, “In the starkest terms ever used, the scientific community is looking world leaders directly in the eye and demanding that they wake up.” Click here for a Commondreams article about the story.

A boat carrying dozens of migrants leaving a port in Turkey has capsized near the Black Sea, killing at least 24 people. The boat may have been headed to Romania, a popular entry point for migrants seeking entrance to the European Union. A search and rescue operation is currently underway. Meanwhile, German Chancellor Angela Merkel has publicly chastised the UK for its immigration policies which she sees as antithetical to the EU policy allowing freedom of movement within member states. In exceptionally strong terms, Merkel warned that the UK was nearing a “point of no return,” for its US-like policies of targeting and deporting immigrants, and risks being kicked out of the EU entirely. And finally here in the US, law enforcement in Ferguson, Missouri, have been found to be violating yet another right – that of freedom of the press. The Associated Press found that St. Louis County police this summer asked federal officials to restrict airspace over Ferguson during anti-police brutality protests. The real reason for a no-fly zone was apparently to restrict television news helicopters which could have witnessed violent police responses to protests. While the Federal Aviation Administration has denied it, St. Louis police apparently did not have any problem with commercial airlines flying over Ferguson, and phone recordings with FAA officials reveal it was indeed the media that the no-fly zone was targeting.
