Former Israeli Settler Explores Real History of 1948 Through Film

Anger over Israel’s attempt to change its policies on the East Jerusalem holy site of the Al Aqsa mosque has resulted in two car attacks just weeks apart. Earlier this week a Palestinian man rammed his car into a group of Israeli police, killing one and injuring over a dozen others. He was shot dead by Israeli police. Hamas has taken responsibility for the incident, citing “continued Zionist crimes,” against the mosque and sparking fears of another Palestinian intifada. Jordan’s government has recalled its ambassador to Israel, citing what it calls, “unprecedented Israeli escalation” in Jerusalem’s holy sites.

Also this week Amnesty International released a report calling Israel’s war on Gaza this summer, rife with “war crimes.” The group used harsh language, saying Israel had expressed, “callous indifference” in its attacks on civilians. The report documented 8 instances where Israel attacked civilians in their homes killing more than 100 people, 62 of whom were children.

Meanwhile, moves are afoot in Europe to recognize a Palestinian state. Sixty six years after the founding of the state of Israel and the loss of Palestine as a nation, British MPs in mid-October passed a symbolic vote to recognize a Palestinian state. And just yesterday French lawmakers are preparing a similar resolution to bring before their Parliament. At the same time, former Italian foreign minister Federica Mogherini who just began her term as the new EU Foreign Policy chief, told press she would like to see a Palestinian state within five years.

Palestinians refer to the loss of their homeland as Al Nakba, or the catastrophe. Yet most Israelis remain blissfully unaware of the mass expulsion of Palestinians that paved the way for their new state. Some Israelis who were actually on the front lines of that expulsion project do remember however, and are featured in an award winning documentary called On the Side of the Road

GUEST: Lia Tarachansky, former West Bank settler, film maker with Real News Network, whose documentary is entitled, On the Side of the Road
