Pasco, Washington Community Outraged Over No Charges in Police Killing of Mexican Farmworker
GUEST: Gabriel Portugal, founding member of the Latino Civil Alliance, and former Commissioner with Washington State Commission on Hispanic Affairs.
The Egyptian government is coming under fire from Mexico, after Egyptian forces killed 12 Mexican nationals over the weekend who were apparently tourists. While the story is in line with the dangerous situation in Egypt, Mexicans also face dangers here in the US, as do other immigrants from Latin America, and Latino and Chicano Americans.
Recently a controversial police shooting of an unarmed Mexican man in the small town of Pasco, Washington, made national news when the officers involved were not charged. The man in question was a 35-year old Mexican national Antonio Zambrano-Montes who was confronted on February 10th of this year, by three officers for throwing rocks at cars.
A bystander’s cell phone video of the shooting which has been viewed well over a million times, shows police chasing the unarmed man with his hands up in the air before he was shot seventeen times. The Franklin County Prosecutor in Washington last week decided not to charge officers Ryan Flanagan, Adam Wright and Adrian Alaniz, prompting community protests.
