A Syrian American Poet Reflects on War, Refugees, and Art
GUEST: Omar Offendum, Syrian American hip hop artist and poet.
As the United Nations General Assembly meets in New York, the main topic of discussion has been the massive refugee crisis facing Europe, and the war that is responsible for much of it – the bloody battle between the Syrian government and a confusing number of rebel groups. US President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin clashed diplomatically over the war, with both nations blaming one another. Russia has been the strongest foreign supporter of Syrian government Bashar Al Assad, while the US only got militarily involved over the past few months, heading a coalition to target the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria. Some have accused the US of implicitly bolstering Assad.
Meanwhile, tens of thousands of Syrians have died in the war. Millions have been internally and externally displaced.
