Fracture: Barack Obama, the Clintons, and the Racial Divide
GUEST: Joy Ann Reid, National Correspondent for MSNBC, appearing regularly on prime time programs such as Chris Matthews and The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell. She is the former managing editor of TheGrio.com and her writings have appeared in the New York Times, the Miami Herald, Salon, and more.
Activists with the Black Lives Matter movement recently asked the Democratic and Republican National Committees to host a debate focused entirely on racial justice. The group has navigated media coverage and electoral politics in raising the profile of issues of police brutality in black communities, as well as economic justice, LGBT rights, immigration, and more. But the two major parties would rather not debate these topics, for race has always been a useful tool for Republican and Democratic candidates to woo voters of color while appeasing white racial resentment.
