Anti-Racist Student-Led Revolt at U. Missouri Results in Victory
GUEST: Cristina Mislan, Assistant Professor of Journalism Studies, Missouri School of Journalism, and a regular guest on Uprising.
University of Missouri President Tim Wolfe resigned yesterday amid growing tensions on his campus over black students facing racism. For weeks, students under the banner #ConcernedStudent1950, led a boycott of the campus stores, and recently even launched a hunger strike, calling on Wolfe to resign. At a homecoming parade in October, black students surrounded the President’s car. Then, over the weekend, the activism took on a more urgent tone when campus athletes joined in. About 30 black football players threw their solidarity with students into the mix and vowed not to participate in any sporting activities until Wolfe resigned. That appeared to be the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back.
