BANNED BROADCAST

GUEST: Hart Viges is active with the group Sustainable Options for Youth. He is based in Austin, Texas, and is headed to Northern California later this week.

It’s Veteran’s Day today – a day when the US is supposed to remember soldiers who fought in wars, a day to fly flags, march in parades, and of course, shop in special Veteran’s Day sales. The past decade and a half has been a grim one for troops, being deployed to numerous wars that have seemingly no end.

Behind the facade of heroism, glory, and nationalistic pride, are the tragic statistics that show more soldiers die by their own hand than in combat, wracked by Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Homelessness, unemployment, sexual assault, and domestic violence are hallmarks of the lives that veterans lead.

Today, to mark Veteran’s Day, we turn to one of the first soldiers who was deployed to Iraq as part of combat operations in that war.

Event Details: Hart Viges will be doing a training for people interested in counter recruitment efforts on Saturday, Nov 14th, from 1 pm to 4:30 pm at Intersection of the Arts, 925 Mission Street, San Francisco.
