GUEST: Jessica Karp Bansal, litigation director at NDLON.

The Supreme Court is hearing a legal challenge to President Obama’s executive actions on immigration this week. Obama’s program, created just over a year ago, allowed for the deferred deportation of undocumented parents of legal residents. The program is called DAPA, or Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents. Immigration advocates had criticized the president for not going far enough and allowing deportation deferment for parents of the undocumented who qualified under another program, DACA.

The court hearing comes within days of a new push to aggressively round up and deport hundreds of mostly Central American refugees who were denied asylum requests. Immigrant communities have been so devastated by the raids that high school students in Minneapolis earlier this week walked out of their schools in protest.
