The Iowa caucuses have been seen as a bell weather of primary races in Presidential elections. Kicking off primary season, the state of Iowa attracts national and even international attention every four years, even as it struggles to pull off extremely complicated “caucusing” in 99 precincts to choose a Presidential candidate for each major party.

Monday night’s caucus in Iowa yielded one major surprise – Ted Cruz beat Donald Trump among Republicans, winning 27.6% of the votes to Trump’s 24%. Marco Rubio followed closely behind Trump with 23%.

Among Democrats, Bernie Sanders ended up in a “virtual tie” (his words) with Hillary Clinton, with only 0.3% of votes separating the two. This, despite the fact that several precincts resulted in exact splits for the two candidates, and resorted to coin tosses to break the ties, as per the bizarre state rules. Clinton apparently managed to win them all!
