Despite Mass Opposition, World Leaders Gather to Sign TPP
GUEST: Patrick Woodall, Research Director and Senior Policy Advocate for Food & Water Watch, advocate on economic justice issues in Washington, and coauthor of a book on the World Trade Organization.
Representatives from a dozen nations including the US are gathering in Auckland, New Zealand this week to sign the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP). The TPP is a complex and very secret trade deal on which the Obama Administration has pinned hopes of reviving its economic power in East Asia, against Chinese supremacy.
But the deal is reviled by activists around the world including here in the US, as it stands to hand over decision-making on crucial policies to big corporations.
In Washington DC, to protest the signing of the TPP, a large demonstration is expected on Thursday, accusing the US government of betraying Americans. The TPP still has to be ratified by the Parliaments and Congressional houses of the governments involved.
