Chelsea Manning Speaks Out in Podcast – Excerpt
GUEST: Chelsea Manning, Iraq war whistleblower, serving a 35-year sentence.
The world’s best-known imprisoned whistleblower, Chelsea Manning, is not afraid to speak out. Serving a 35-year sentence in Fort Leavenworth military prison in Kansas, she has continued to use her high profile to speak out against injustice. Only in her 20s, Manning was convicted of violating the 1917 Espionage Act in sharing classified information about the Iraq and Afghanistan wars with Wikileaks. After her conviction, she transitioned from male to female and is also fighting for her rights as a transgender prisoner.
Amnesty International UK has just released a podcast featuring Chelsea Manning’s words telling her own story. It’s part of their series called In Their Own Words. Because Manning is unable to speak directly to journalists, her words were read by actress Michelle Hendley. Today on Uprising, we share with you an excerpt of this podcast.
