GUEST: Jeff Cohen is an associate professor of journalism and the director of the Park Center for Independent Media at Ithaca College, founder of the media watch group FAIR, and former board member of Progressive Democrats of America.

The two remaining candidates for the Democratic Presidential nomination held their fifth debate on Thursday evening in New Hampshire. The debate comes ahead of the second primary race which takes place in the same state on February 9th. NBC called it “The Democratic Race’s Most Combative Debate Yet.” Now that Martin O’Malley has withdrawn, it was down to Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton. The two of them traded jabs over many of the same issues as before: gun control, Wall Street’s power, the Affordable Care Act, and the Iraq war. One of the most tense moments of the debate occurred when Clinton accused Sanders of casting “an artful smear,” against her by suggesting that donations she has received from big banks and other businesses would influence her policy. The two also sparred over what defines a progressive.

Clinton was declared the winner of the Iowa caucuses on Monday, despite an extremely close race. She claimed in a speech afterwards that she is “a progressive who gets things done.” My guest Jeff Cohen takes great issue with that characterization.
